Relationships
Throughout the book we see Meursault detached from everyone around him. Once he is in prison, however, he undergoes many changes. Some of them include showing emotions and hope. During this time he also talks about Marie and even Maman and the times before her death. Do you believe that he did love Maman or Marie?

I do not think Meursault loved Marie or Maman, at this point in time at least. It seems as though he likes Marie in a physical manner, as apposed to truely loving her for who she is. I think he did love Maman at one point in time, perhaps when he was younger or as a child. It seems as though he has not loved her since he has been unable to take care of her and he put her in the home.
Arrr, as Forest said, Me don't belie'e that Meursalt really lo'ed anyone, Me just think that he was nostalgic for his former life where he could do anythin' he wanted, and since Marie usually was a part o' that, he remembers her. Aye.
About Maman, I think that he is just rememberin' her because he doesn't have anythin' else t' do.
Just like a lonely mate at sea would remember his dead crew. Gar.
